Renting vs. Buying in Metro Detroit: What Makes More Sense?

Run the math twice
A mortgage payment can look similar to a rent payment, but the two are not the same number. A mortgage builds equity, fixes a big part of your monthly cost, and gives you control. Renting buys flexibility, zero maintenance, and the ability to move in a month's notice.
In Macomb County, where median prices sit around $250,000 to $270,000, the monthly math often favors buying for anyone planning to stay three or more years. In higher-priced Oakland County communities, the break-even stretches further out.
The honest part nobody sells you
Buying includes property taxes, insurance, maintenance, and the occasional surprise water heater. Renting includes zero of those. If your savings are thin or your job is unstable, renting is not a failure, it's a strategy.
At the end of the day, it's about what's best for you. I'll happily tell you when buying doesn't make sense yet, because a client who waits a year and buys stronger is a client for life.
Bridge the two
The smartest move a lot of renters make is buying a home, then renting out a room or buying a little below budget so the gap between rent and mortgage stays small. We can map that plan together before you ever sign a lease renewal.
