Moving to Metro Detroit? Here's What You Should Know

The three-county map, explained simply
Metro Detroit splits into three counties. Wayne County holds Detroit and its close-in suburbs. Macomb County is the value corridor: strong family suburbs like Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, and St. Clair Shores at prices that still feel sane. Oakland County is the premium ring: Troy, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Rochester Hills, with higher prices and top-ranked schools.
Most transplants land in Oakland for schools and jobs, or Macomb for value, with Wayne for urban energy. My specialty sits in Macomb and Oakland, where I can honestly compare across both sides of the line.
What surprises newcomers
Property taxes here are based on half of market value and can reset when a home sells, so always check the projected taxes, not the seller's bill. Winter matters less than marketing suggests, but a garage and a good snow plan should be on the list. And the region's neighborhoods vary block to block, so local knowledge is not a nice-to-have, it's the whole game.
How I help you land
I'll build you a shortlist of communities based on your commute, schools, and budget, then walk each one with you until the map stops being abstract. I can also connect you with lenders, inspectors, and movers so the whole relocation feels like one plan instead of ten to-do lists.
